Frustration with Google Apps

January 4, 2010 filed under photography | 6 Comments

I’m so, so very frustrated with trying to set up Google Apps!!

I’ve been trying to set up email for my photography to go to a jeanetteverster.com address so I can move off my generic gmail account, but it seems that I’m destined not to get it right.

There is NO way to get hold of someone at Google to help me!!

Here are the facts:

1.  I’ve never set up Google Apps for my domain before, yet the damn system seems to think I have.  It seems to have someone else’s email address listed as the administator of the domain, and I have no way of figuring out who it’s going to!!

2.  I’ve followed every single step to prove that I’m the administrator of the domain, and I’m happy that Google can now see the CNAME record.

3.  I get to the last stage where I have to confirm the change.  Google sends me a daft email saying I must now follow the steps on the original mail I got when I set up Google Apps.  HELLO PEOPLE, what part of I NEED TO PROVE I OWN THE FRICKING DOMAIN DON’T YOU GET!!!

4.  I then select the option for Google to resend the email… and then the process disappears in to the ether!! I can only assume it’s sending the email to my mystery email address!! I’m so fricking annoyed it’s not even funny.

Then to try and contact Google for help is virtually impossible! I cannot find a way to get someone to help me!

I’d like to know who is receiving my emails? I’d like to know how to fix this? It’s MY site!!

Any reason why you can’t just create a youremail at jeanetteverster dot com address, and forward the incoming gmail? Much easier.

Also, when you first get your own domain, usually the host creates an admin email account on your behalf usually something like firstsixlettersofdomain at domain dot com. I have found in the past that that particular email or username needs to be used when setting up new email at owndomain accounts.

Anyhoo, hope you get straightened out! Nothing more frustrating than something which should work, not working. Arg.

Oh no… how frustrating. I sure hope you get it solved by morning (my morning, heh).

And I’m just going to comment here about the bag you won … how lovely!! Congrats.

I don’t rely on Gmail for that very reason, but use it every day as my primary email. Here’s how I do it:

    1. I have my own domain on my own server set up with the email address(es) I want to use, such as me@jenty.com.

    2. I set up that email address to keep a copy of all mail locally (for an archive and to use if gMail goes down) and also forward all messages to free myaccountname@gmail.com address.

    3. Set up the mailing address I want to use as the FROM address under gMail->Settings->Accounts and Import->Send Mail As . (You can set up multiple possible FROM addresses here if desired, either for multiple addresses within your domain and/or for multiple domains)

    4. Start using gMail for all my accounts.

    5. If gMail ever has outages or problems, I use the webmail interface that comes with my domain on my server.

    Hope this helps!

Cool!! Thanks so much, I was about to change my settings to do that tonight, but wasn’t sure if that was the right answer :)
