Stressing in advance

January 9, 2010 filed under photography | 11 Comments

Yip, that’s me… I’m stressing about the wedding I’m booked for in Feb already!!

I went to the venue today to scout around for creative shoot locations… and I forgot to look for somewhere to do the family photos!! I even remembered about the one specific photo they requested… but to find a location for the family photos completely skipped my mind!

Arrghhh!! It’s not like I have time to wander around on the day!

To be a portrait photog is one thing… a wedding photographer is something else completely!

The whole timing thing on the day is stressing me out more than anything else… and I shouldn’t blog about it either, because I know they’re following my blogs!

I should be fine though… I know what I’m doing… I know where to go for the creatives.  It’s just daunting! I did that other wedding so long ago!

A friend of mine was stressing just as much a few weeks ago for a wedding she was booked for.  At the time I thought, how silly to be so stressed… she’s an excellent photographer… she’s ultra creative (much more creative than me)… she’s done umpteen couple shoots and portrait sessions… it’ll be a walk in the park for her!

And now I’m sitting sheepishly in the same boat.

And talking about Wedding photographers… when I was looking around for examples of photos done there, I’m shocked at how badly photographers use their sites and blogs! The post I did about the venue just now is almost on the front page of Google already!

There’s a photographer who seems to take photos there regularly, and only one of his weddings comes up on Google… I had to go hunting in his site for the rest! It’s so so silly!

You’ll be fine!! You can do it!!

I am sure people chose you because your pictures look everything but premeditated and posed. You make magic by stumbling on beautiful and unexpected things and I am sure their wedding day will be no different.

Don’t worry, you will be fine! That is why they chose YOU.

Are you planning on taking someone to assist you? Last year I did a wedding as a favour to someone, and trust me if I did not take DH with to assist me I would not have made it through the day! He even took a few photos with my 2nd camera (set on AV LOL) and it turned out he got a shot which I missed due to my angle.

Relax…you’re going to be super! ;-)

Jenty, darling – you are a very proper photographer and I would hire you BECAUSE you care so much that you are stressing about it.

I know it sounds trite but everyone is right…you are an unbelievable photog and if you EVER come to CT you better mail me so I can book you. (please?)

I had a shoot at 7am this morn on Noordhoek beach….a friend of mine is a photog and was looking for subjects to play with early beach light etc. Shucks – I forgot how hard it is to be in front of the camera! Cant wait to see the results; esp of me and the man. I have loads of my kids and they are generally a photog’s dream – easy to shoot. Me? Not so much!!

I cannot wait to see some of the pics of this wedding – as Wenchy says, what sets you apart is that you really do care about the result!

    Stop stressing…
timing is important, yes, but a lot of that cannot be controlled by you. You have to work with what you are given.

    Some tips from me..

find out if there is a wedding videographer… get his / her number and chat to them before the wedding.. you NEED to work together to not get in each others way. It’s beneficial to you both that you stay out of each others way.

Wear BLACK! It makes you fade into the background rather than stick out like a sore thumb
    Wear comfy shoes..

if you’re using your flash, take extra batteries… and then buy another emergency pack or 2..

I agree about the assistant / 2nd shooter.. I wouldn’t do a wedding without one..
My assistant usually goes to meet the priest while I’m busy with the bride, he introduces us and finds out what is allowed and what isn’t.. I’ve yet to come across a priest that allows flash during the ceremony.. I think I’ve got bad luck, lol.

take energade with you and maybe some snacks to keep you going.. we are very often forgotten about when it comes to sustenance. :)

A lot of photog’s now ask the clients if they will do their shoot BEFORE their ceremony – see here.. http://feuzareis.com/?p=868
I haven’t had luck yet in convincing anyone to do this.. mores the pity.. I can only imagine how awesome our shots would be when we aren’t pressed for time..

hope this helps, I’m sure it will all be fine!
