I got stuck in a lift

That’s right… you read that right… after 37 years of existance I can positively attest to have been stuck in a lift (or elevator for my US readers).

And let me tell you, it was not a pleasant experience!

It happened about half an hour ago, and the cappucino that I’m busy drinking has managed to stop my shaking… and the fact that I’ve blasted someone at facilities (and they’re going to fix it apparently, and I spoke to the person in charge of the people who are supposed to respond to the lift bell and they’re going to sort that out too).

So now that I’m calmer, this is what happened…

I parked in the bowels of the earth, so I took a lift in a parking garage to get to the ground floor.

The lift had started moving from -2 to the Ground floor, when the lights went out and the lift stopped.

That’s right… THE LIGHTS WENT OUT!!  I was alone in the lift.  Used the light from my cell phone to find the emergency button.  Rang the bell… no answer.  Then the lift started dropping, it wasn’t fast though so I was still calm.

Then I tried to use my cell, but there’s no reception.  So I tried to tweet, but not even enough reception for that.

I’m really not sure how long I was in there in the dark… ringing the bell endlessly with no response, but couldn’t have been for longer than 10 minutes.

Suddenly the lights come on, but still the buttons wouldn’t work.  Then the lift dropped again.  Then finally the lift started working again, and I was on -3 but the door wouldn’t open… and then it let me press G again, and went to where I was supposed to go.

I think I need wine actually! This coffee isn’t really doing much.

What an ordeal! I have never been stuck in a lift before but I can imagine what you went through. And whether it was 5 seconds or 5 minutes, the shock must have been bad. Glad you’re okay…

Being stuck in a lift is never fun, glad you are okay, with no lights that must have been very scary. We used to get stuck all the time at Varsity res but the lights never went out and I was never alone. Go get wine i think it is deserved

I’m sure glad youre okay and I think you need a stiff whiskey and to go home after that. My nervous would’ve been shattered.

It hasn’t happened to me yet TG!

Happened to me once in Tech but we were about 10 in the lift and the lift was about 500 years old!

Oh no – that is terrible. I have a bit of claustrophobia, so really, the two times that it has happened was a nightmare for me.

A friend of mine once had a similar experience. Big, strong, tough guy. When they finally got the doors open, he was shriveled up in a corner and crying.

Glad you made it out safely! I would recommend the wine as well.

OMW!!! It’s must have been traumatic. Thank goodness you were on your own in a way – but not getting a response and that feeling of helplessness with no means of communication – that’s fall apart material!!! A BOTTLE OF RED WINE is called for!!!

Goodness me! How scary! The very same thing happened to me when I was working at Nedbank and I was pregnant! I reported and fought and performed, but nothing was ever done about it. I took the stairs from then on! Glad you are ok!

Oh my goodness. You know that fear of snakes that I have? Well being stuck in small places comes a close second. I was freaked out reading your post. Never mind a glass of wine, you need a bottle a night for the rest of the week!! You’ve earned it. Glad you are ok though.
