On Friday evening, Connor and I went to watch Disney’s Cinderella Kids at the People’s Theatre in Braamfontein. We were invited to attend the opening performance of this gorgeous play that is on until the end of July.

It was a media event, which is why I was allowed to take photos. In fact, I triple checked with the PR company that evening. I’m sure she thought I was a little mad. LOL!

If you haven’t been before, the Peoples Theatre is a children’s theatre. It’s not exceptionally big, so no matter where you get to sit you’re not too far from the action. Going to that theatre is always such a treat with kids. The plays are aimed at children, so there’s always loads of movement and singing alongs.

Saying that though, the productions are brilliant! We loved the acting, costumes, lighting and well, the entire thing.

The performance

We thought it was a brilliant play. The set was amazing. The music was perfect. The performances of the actors were perfect. We enjoyed every single moment.

One of my favourite characters was the king, played by Gregg Pettigrew. His character was larger than life and he made us giggle every time he was on stage.

The kids that played the mice were phenomenal. What amazing little actors!

The little girls in the audience, however, were unsurprisingly enamoured by Cinderella (Kaylin Sabbadin). There were quite a few dressed up like her, and I loved that the theatre sold wands and tiaras at the box office. It’s such a lovely story for kids to watch.

If you’re wondering about the heads in the photos, we were in the middle of the row in the middle of the theatre. They were perfect seats. Connor sat behind another child so he could see the whole stage.

The verdict

We absolutely LOVED it!

A highlight was the audience singing along to Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo! I loved how the audience got involved throughout the performance and kids were singing on top of their voices and screaming for “Cinderellee”.

Come on, you know the song…

“Salago-doola, Menchicka boola, Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo…”

“Put ’em together and what have you got? Bibbidi-bobbidi-Boo…”

Hah! And now you also have the earworm don’t you?

Kids theatre is really so much fun.  I was a little worried beforehand, that Connor was too old for the show. I needn’t have been concerned though, because he thoroughly enjoyed himself. Because he’s older he noticed most of the adult humour and saw a lot of the detail that little kids miss. We were both singing on top of our voices when we needed to, and that made it so much fun.

Tickets

Disney’s Cinderella Kids is on until 30 July at the People’s Theatre in Braamfontein. There are morning and afternoon performances available. Bookings are available via Webtickets or at the theatre’s box office.

If you’re wondering, safe underground parking is available in the main Joburg theatre and you walk through the main theatre to get to this little kids theatre on the outside.

Disclaimer: Although we got the tickets to watch the performance, I wasn’t asked to blog about it. I just think it’s awesome, and you need to see it with your kids.
