A new look by Judith Shakes Designs

January 21, 2011 filed under technology | 14 Comments

So…. do you like the new layout?  hmm? hmm?

It was designed by Judith Shakes Designs.  It’s not a local design (if you’re wondering), and it’s a custom layout design done just for me!!

Cool hey?

I asked for something plain.  Didn’t want too fancy, but I was quite specific about a few things.  I don’t think I was an easy client though.  In fact, when I sent her my list of requirements and links to sites that I liked, she replied saying that normally she gets examples that are similar… but she couldn’t find any similarities between the ones I sent her.

LOL! Sounds like me right?  Completely indecisive!

But somehow she got it right.  This was her first try and I didn’t even want one change.  I love the colours.  I love the simplicity.  I love that it’s very different to my photography blog (which is also crying for a makeover).

As for the circumstances around me getting Judith Shakes Design to do my blog… well… I actually won the custom layout on Sarcastic Mom’s blog because of the Weekly Winners challenge a year ago, and I finally got my butt into gear and followed up! LOL!  My blog was in desperate need of a new look.  I’ve been eyeing her designs out for ages though, and wanting something that was me… and I think I got it!

A gentleman with merit

January 20, 2011 filed under kids | 10 Comments

Lance got a call from the school yesterday asking us to attend the assembly this morning because Bradley was going to get a merit award.  Now, for those who can’t remember last year’s similar story… the school has a system for the junior grades where every child has a turn to get a merit award in the year.  They’re given to the kids weekly in assembly, and Bradley’s happened to be the first one.

He got it for being kind and courteous and being a gentleman.

Awww, my boy :) )

When I took him home (he wasn’t actually feeling very well today but I made him go to assembly before I took him straight home), he told me that he thought it was because he lets the girls go into the classroom first.  He also told me that he’s been teaching the other boys in his class about girls having to go in first… and he waits for his teacher too.

Sweet hey?!

On the subject of teachers, I’m hoping that she’s going to be ok.  She doesn’t seem very at ease with the kids, and she’s very quiet.  Now, I know she’s new to the school and all that… but I’m not getting a great level of comfort from her at the moment.

Too hot to think tonight

January 8, 2009 filed under Arb | Comments Closed

I’m sure I had a brilliant post idea, but I cannot think what the topic was! So while I’ve been trying to remember, I’ve spent the time updating the blogroll! Finally!

So many of my favourite bloggers have moved to new blogging homes, and my list was seriously in need of a revamp. I’ve also decided to split the SA and Non-SA blogs that I love visiting, and until I did that I didn’t actually realise how many local blogs I read now!
Most of the photography blogs I follow are international though.

If I’ve left you off, sorry, just let me know, and I’ll add your link too!

And speaking of links etc, I was PMSL yesterday when I read Shebee’s post about the Nerdies 2009 nominations, and saw that I came in as a close runner up!! LOL!! There’s still time to vote for your favourite SA nerd, so visit the link and vote already! :)

And speaking of nominations, I’ve heard that my photoblog has been nominated under the Photography and African Blog categories of the 2009 Bloggies… yip… that’s going to be interesting.  I doubt very much that I have ANY hope of getting somewhere but LOL it’s fun trying :)   So, please follow the link and vote for http://www.jeanetteverster.com!

Celebrations at bookclub

April 5, 2008 filed under Uncategorized | Comments Closed

After I got home from the airport last night with my tree (and YAY managed not to get highjacked on the way home.. yes, you have to watch your back at the Jo’burg Airport), and tucked the kids into bed and had a quick chat with Lance, I zooted off to bookclub with my bottle of wine in hand. Btw, you can read about my journey with my tree here…

Ooops, and yes, I forgot to take a book :)   The wine was much more important :)

It was so cool! Fiona brought a bottle of champers too! Everyone fell in love with my wine that I got as an award, so we all had a bit. What a gorgeous wine!
There’s nothing better than celebrating with friends. I was explaining to my colleague on the way home that we all met online, and she was amazed. Hee hee! I find that people are constantly amazed that I’ve made real friends online. In fact, yesterday morning at the Waterfront I bumped into Rikke, and another colleague as astounded when I said that I’d never actually met her before, but recognised her from her photos and we were chatting like old friends.

I suppose I should have made more of an effort to get together with the Cape Town ladies, but I ran out of time, and without having a constant network connection it was very difficult to get in contact with people. In fact, I would have loved to meet up with Jane for one!

I actually won!

April 3, 2008 filed under Uncategorized | Comments Closed

This has been a BIG week for me!I’ve never won an award before… in my life! Never! Not even at school!

Yes, I won!

My photoblog is the Best SA Photographic Blog for 2008. How cool is that!!

I went to the SA Blog Awards ceremony in Cape Town last night. Let me say… the UCT Tennis Club is almost impossible to find, it took me almost 20 minutes of driving around the campus to find it… not even the students that I asked knew how to find it! But it was worth the effort! It was so interesting to meet the other bloggers… it’s always fascinating meeting people that you’ve been chatting with online. I now have a lot more blogs to read! I’m so glad I went. Not only because of my award, but it was so exciting when a blog that I’d voted for was a winner too!

And do you know what I won? A bottle of Warwick wine, and an indigenous tree! Yip, a tree! Which would be great if I lived in Cape Town, but LOL, it’s going to be very interesting getting the tree on the plane to go home on Friday evening!

I’ve never left the boys for more than 2 nights, and it’s taking it’s toll on me today. I’m missing them and Lance so much!

However, I love being in Cape Town. It’s such a beautiful city. I’m having a ball taking my colleagues to the sights after we finish working in the evenings. 2 of my colleagues have really never seen the city, so I’m taking them to all my favourite spots. I love showing people things that they’ve never seen before. I love the look of wonder on their faces when they see Cape Town from a high point for the first time. Yesterday evening I took them to Signal Hill (some of the photos are on my photoblog), and this evening we’re planning on going to Hout Bay and then on to dinner at one of the wonderful spots in Camps Bay overlooking the sea on the way back to Sea Point.

And lastly, the Zimbabwe election results are simply incredible! I can’t believe that the MDC got the majority vote!! At last. I’m stoked… utterly stoked! I really hope that this is the beginning of the rebuilding of the country I was born in. I also hope that Mugabe will step down… I somehow doubt it… and I’m sure there are going to be problems with the military too… but still… I live in hope!
