I could get used to this

September 1, 2009 filed under family | 7 Comments

Lance had supper ready by the time I got home tonight.  And he’d been to the shops!! And the homework was done! Wow!

I told him this evening, that I could get used to this house-husband thing.  If I made enough money for him to stay at home, I’d be fine with going to work and doing my photography on weekends.

He was horrified!! LOL! Which is hilarious considering that’s what he’s been joking about doing since we got married!

I think the last few weeks at home have cured him of that illusion.  He now reckons he’d sweep streets rather than stay at home all day ;)

Our stray has quietly gone away

June 9, 2009 filed under Arb | 2 Comments

A stray black cat arrived in our garden about 15 months ago.  After a few weeks of seeing it around, I decided to start feeding it… I couldn’t let it starve.

I’ve fed this cat since then.  He/she was definitely very wild.  I don’t know whether it was male or female so I’ll just refer to it as it from now on because I can’t decide how to type the story otherwise ;)

It never tried to come inside the house, and slept in the garden.  It wouldn’t let any of us get close at all and would hiss at us if we tried to touch it.

Yet, I liked having it around… and now I think it’s gone.

We haven’t seen it in about 2 weeks, but the food has been finished every day.  Not that that says very much, because the hadedas and doves got a strange liking to catfood and polished off the cat’s food by the end of each day anyway.

Oh well, I just hope it’s found somewhere nice and cosy and warm to live this winter and that it’s being fed.

I’m really so very tempted to get the boys a pet now.

Happy and sad moment

May 11, 2009 filed under kids | 11 Comments

Let me sketch the scene… Lance has gone to Cape Town for the night, so the boys are terrorising me on my own tonight.

Bradley has been very good, because he knows he gets to sleep in my bed when dad is away (I lock us in the main bedroom at night with the alarm set in the rest of the house and garden when he’s away).  Connor has been his most impossible self… like normal.

I actually got the better of Connor eventually.  He didn’t want a bottle (that’s HUGE!), he wanted Milo like Bradley .  I dragged him down the stairs a few times to insist that he finishes his Milo, and I think I eventually somewhere along the line gained control! For the first time in weeks!! He even brushed his teeth without too much drama.

Oh but then it was bedtime.  He knew that Bradley was upstairs so he insisted to sleeping with Bradley right away.  And then it was a nightmare… he wanted to play hide-and-seek and incy-wincy-spider while he’s lying next to Bradley.  Bradley kept trying to turn away from him, or turn towards him and cuddle him.

Eventually I gave up, and went to watch Grays Anatomy instead… and I went back upstairs after 5 or so minutes… they were both fast asleep!! WOW!  I think Bradley cuddled his brother to sleep!

So yes, that’s my happy and sad moment.  Happy that it’s finally quiet.  Sad because they didn’t need me.

And what’s the best medicine for me… red wine (it’s very yum)… a chocolate (it was yum)… and blogging about it… I feel calmer already.

Now hopefully, I can do some proofing!

Gunshots in the dead of night

February 22, 2009 filed under South Africa | Comments Closed

Last night Lance and I woke up to the sounds of gunshots.

Before all you non-SA people lift your eyebrows… it doesn’t happen often in my neighbourhood… which is why we woke up.

Last night, however, it sounded closer than I’ve ever heard them.  First we heard screaming.  Then we heard shots.  It was definitely from 2 different guns, they sounded very different.  And it must’ve been very close for us to have heard the screams.  And then the shots were on the move… the sounds came closer to our house… and then further away.

Lance and I were chatting about it this morning and we both feel that the strangest thing of all was that there were no police sirens AT ALL!  Weird.

They must’ve been called by people living closer to the noise.  But who knows if they ever arrived?!  I suppose I’ll have to wait for the next email from the neighbourhood watch people to see wha was going on.  If it had happened closer to us, we would have phoned the neighbourhood security and the police but we didn’t because we had no idea where the sound was coming from and we weren’t going to take a chance and go looking for it (but nothing and no-one came down our road).

My MIL phoned this afternoon though, to tell us that a friend of hers heard on the radio that there was a shootout last night in our area with AK47′s, but I can’t find any news on the net about it.

Very strange.  And so tonight, our garden alarm beams went on extra early and Lance says he’s not going to sleep well (I always sleep well ;) ).

Where there's smoke there will be fire

August 27, 2008 filed under kids | Comments Closed

Connor’s been at it again! I posted the photos for Wordless Wednesday on my photoblog, but I feel that the whole story needs to be told.   Beauty told me the story this morning before I came to work, and I just had to take photos of the melted things before I threw them out.

We were very lucky.  Our guardian angels must have been watching over us yesterday.

Beauty was busy ironing, and Bradley was watching TV in the lounge (Bradley’s on holiday at the moment, so Beauty is looking after both of them in the mornings).  Beauty noticed that Connor was vey quiet and went looking for him.

She found him playing upstairs in my bedroom, so she brought him downstairs.  She didn’t notice anything untowards.

Then, 2 hours later, after my mom had picked the boys up; she went back upstairs and saw smoke, and went to investigate. ***insert shocked eyes and rolling eyes emoticons here***

Now, I keep my hairdryer in the top drawer of a chest of drawers, but the cord is always still plugged in and turned on.  It’s never been a problem before, because he could never really reach it.

It looks like Connor tried to get the hairdryer out of the drawer to play with it.  He must’ve turned it on while reaching inside the drawer.  It must’ve given him a fright, because he closed the drawer and went to find something else to destroy.

By the time Beauty opened the drawer, most of the things in the drawer were melting.  The old camera has melted, but strangely enough still turns on.  Batteries have melted.  The mozzie machine has melted.  The plastic covering that housed the boys’ clinic books melted, and the paper is singed.  Most of the paper that was inside the drawer is black.

Even the hairdryer’s nozzle has melted!!  It still works though, but the attachment doesn’t fit on the end anymore.

Which leads me to believe that she got there just in time!! My only question is why she didn’t hear the noise?  Was the TV that loud??

Needless to say, it’s switched off at the wall now!
