Day 16 – Someone or something you definitely could live without

November 8, 2010 filed under Me | 4 Comments

This is Day 16 in the 30 truths for 30 days meme

Tequila.

I try my damndest not to have it when I go out.  If anyone is offering, I disappear very quickly.

I can’t handle it, the mere smell of it makes me queasy.

The problem with it stems back to a time pre-Lance, when I was at varsity.  I had this car accident you see, and I was in a neck brace, and on anti-inflammatories and painkillers.  And the guys I was in the accident with decided to take me out to say sorry, because I was the only one hurt.   So we went to this club in Fourways Mall, and the band that was playing had a competition seeing who the loudest group in the place… and we got the prize (the 3 of us, thinking back now it was probably a sympathy thing because I was in a neck brace, but anyhoo).

The prize was a bottle of tequila.  Which we then finished.

I still can’t drink any of it!! That happened about 18 years ago!

So not into that

February 26, 2010 filed under Arb | 7 Comments

A colleague was talking about his plans for the evening, and mentioned that a friend of his had got him tickets to see some musician… and that the show starts at 11pm.

I couldn’t imagine anything worse, than milling around waiting for this dude to start playing at that godforsaken hour.  Yes, I do work on my editing until that time… but that sounds like such an aimless wait!

I’m so past that!  I might be a fuddy duddy because of that, but you know what, I’m ok with that!

Enjoy your weekend, whatever you may be doing  :)

Twins and combis

May 24, 2009 filed under memories | 9 Comments

On Friday afternoon I bumped into an ex-boyfriend as I was leaving the office (he works in the building).  He was a little vague unusually so I wished him a good weekend and I was about to go to my car when he obviously changed his mind about telling me his news, and he told me that he was having twins.  In November!

It was so funny when I congratulated him.  He was genuinely surprised that I was happy for him.  He eventually said that he’s only just got used to the idea, but that he is happy about it… now.  Strange man :)   He then started reminiscing and saying how far we are now from our varsity days with endless pub and drinking evenings etc. LOL! I agreed with him and said that now things will really change, now that he has 3 kids!

As I said goodbye, I mentioned that he’s going to have to get bigger cars too.  Especially with twins.  And I knew that would be a major thing for him because he drives old jags and minis!  There’s no way his brood will fit now!  So he laughed and said he’d have to get a crap caravelle or something to fit everyone.

He made me remininisce too.  While I drove home, I was thinking how funny it was that he’s come full circle.  When we were at varsity he used to drive his dad’s VW combi.  LOL!  And one epic holiday we went with a whole bunch of mates to Knysna on a camping trip with this clapped out combi.  It took a month of sundays to get there!  It wouldn’t go more than 80kph and we had to carefully work out whether we had enough petrol to get to the next town to fill up because it chowed gas!  LOL! In the end it was a good thing we took the van because it rained the entire time we were in Knysna and everyone else’s tents leaked so most people had to sleep in it too (Al and my tent was watertight so we were fine)!

That was a GOOD holiday.  I’m surprised I remember so much about it, considering the volumes of Tassies (very bad plonk) and OB’s and Amarula Cream that we consumed!

Hehe so he’s going to have to get a massive car again :) Love it!

Left on the side of the road

March 29, 2009 filed under Arb | 10 Comments

I saw something a little disturbing on the way to the  shops yesterday.  In one sense, I could completely understand how angry the mother must have been, but the rest of me felt very very sad for her poor son.

I was travelling the car with the kids.  We were going on a busy road, when I saw a car stopped on the side of the road.

A woman got out the car and ran around to the back door on the passenger side of the vehicle.  She opened the door and yanked her son out.  He must’ve been about 7 or 8 years old, and he landed on the floor and kicked her.  She didn’t say a word to him, then slammed the door shut, ran around the car again and jumped into the drivers seat and turned the car on.

And then I couldn’t see any more.  I wonder whether she actually drove off without him.  If she did, she couldn’t have gotten far, because he wasn’t there when I went back home that way 15 minutes later.

Can you imagine how scared that boy was?

I think that must’ve been a very scary experience even if his mother had allowed him back into the car before driving off… let alone if she’d actually left him there.

And before you say why didn’t you stop… I had the kids in the car and didn’t want them to be influenced by her crazy antics. If he was on the road when we came home, I would’ve picked him up.

This has got me thinking… that mother has no idea how much damage she’s doing to him.  He’s going to grow up thinking that it’s OK to get angry enough to leave a loved one on the side of the road… and that’s never OK.

It made me wonder whether a guy I knew a long time ago had a similar experience when he was younger.  Let me elaborate.

One evening, long time ago, a friend and I met 2 guys in a bar.  I had a fling with the one guy, she ended up having a fling with the other guy.  My fling ended quite quickly… as my relationships tended to during that time :) , but she saw this guy for a while.  And he ended up being quite a scary and scaly character.

A few months later, she bumped into his next girlfriend in a club, and she asked how he was doing.  This woman told my friend, that they ended up fighting quite hectically, and one night, he got so angry with her, that he stopped on the highway (in the middle of the night), threw her out the car and just left her there!! She didn’t have a cell phone or anything, and had to find her way home… and she hadn’t seen him since.

Scary shit! So lady in the car… if by chance you’re reading this blog… just careful what you’re teaching your son!!

Need to get organised

January 28, 2009 filed under kids | Comments Closed

im-on-the-phone-do-you-mindI really really need to organise Connor’s birthday party.  He’s turning 2 on the 16th and I haven’t even figured out what theme to make his party, let alone what to do for it.

I’m thinking simple… at home… swimming… not even a jumping castle (because it went to waste last year).  Boerie rolls for lunch again.  Not many sweets.

Just the theme… I can’t decide… Barney or spiderman (surprisingly he likes spiderman) or farm animals.  I was going to organise a touch and feed farm thing at home, but I can’t really afford it at the moment.

What do you think the theme should be?

I’d better design the invitations this weekend actually, I’m cutting this a bit fine!

Coulda Woulda Shoulda

November 27, 2008 filed under Uncategorized | Comments Closed

… taken my camera to work today! Damn!

We had our company year-end function, and true to form, it was fabulous! The theme was “Bling it on” and people were dressed up to the nines for the occasion.

It was quite weird not to have my camera there, and I REALLY KICKED myself when the Parlotones started playing LIVE!!  I could have got such amazing photos as the lighting was perfect!

I just thought that the camera bag was so heavy and I didn’t really feel like lugging it around… and I didn’t think I’d be able to use the photos anyway. Ha! I should know by now… REPEAT AFTER SELF… ALWAYS KEEP CAMERA IN CAR!!

As for the outfits… OMW… I think I really need to get a few Ed Hardy T-shirts for Lance and myself!! Love them!! And so many people wearing them!! And I’ve discovered that there’s a shop in Sandton!  Of course, some guys were wearing Christian Audigier… but can’t afford that!

It was very apparent which people wear the bling stuff often… they looked so comfortable in their sequinse and glitter tops etc.

Anyhoo, I came home to blog about it, while everyone else carried on partying. LOL! I’m quite old and sad hey?  There are going to be some very bleary eyes in the office in the morning :)

Night out on the town

October 28, 2008 filed under friends | Comments Closed

I went out on Friday night with a group of girls to celebrate a Sue’s birthday.  What a jol!!

The idea was to have dinner at Outer Limits and then to drink and party the night away, because there was a DJ there. But after our dinner, we decided (or rather the others decided) that the place was dead, and we should go to another more vibey place instead.  OMW, I really didn’t feel like it, I was quite comfortable where I was drinking my wine and chatting.

I got talked into joining them at the next place, so followed them all to Cedar Square.  We ended up at a place called CoFi – like a cocktail lounge.  It was stunning!  After all my moaning, I thoroughly enjoyed myself :)

It was packed, but we managed to get a table outside, right at the edge of the place (I don’t want to know what Kelly and Sam really did to get the table, but their story was hillarious… something about pretending to kiss each other).

I must say, that I felt VERY old when we first got there.  I haven’t been out to a place like that in years.  I laughed so much at the younger people at the bar and their antics.  It was hilarious to see them try and wangle double shots out of the bartenders for free, and watch them try and outdrink each other.

By the end of the evening I wasn’t feeling so old.  This was partly because my ego was stoked a little with 2 incidents.  Firstly, some creepy dude (who Theresa said looked like a vampire) tried to pick me up with the worst pick-up line I’ve heard ever – he tried to tell me that he’d been in the movie industry for 25 years!  He couldn’t have been older than 23! PMSL!

Then the bartender decided that we’d waited too long for our drinks, so Theresa (Fiona‘s sister’s colleague) and I got Capirinhas on the house!  LOL, we were having such fun people watching that we hadn’t realised how long we’d waited, so it was all cool!

It was ALL good! But OMW I was tired and grumpy on Saturday.

Fishy Story

August 23, 2008 filed under memories | Comments Closed

On Wednesdays, there’s a sushi chef that makes fresh sushi (well, obviously LOL!) in our canteen. It’s really yummy, but getting quite pricey so I don’t have it as often as I used to.

Anyhoo, this Wednesday I really felt like having some, so I mentioned it to colleagues as we were going into a working lunch meeting.  And OMW did I get rapped over the knuckles!

One of my colleagues is quite a serious diver, and she told me that she doesn’t eat fish at all anymore, because of the over-fishing and the wiping out of fish species that’s going on in the world.

She really wasn’t happy with me when I went and bought some anyway.  LOL!  I mean, I know that the oceans are over-fished.  I know about the high levels of mercury that now exist in the fish that we eat.  I know all that.  But, I still like eating fish :)  .

I probably sounded callous to her, but I really do understand where she’s coming from. I commend her for not eating it because of her beliefs.  I also commend her for not eating other meat products for similar reasons.  But, I’m still going to eat fish.

Typing this out makes me feel like a bit of a hypocrit, but anyhoo…

The conversation with her reminded me of the time that I went diving (the one and only time!), when I was at varsity.  A whole group of friends, Nats included, went to Sodwana Bay for our diving course.  It was an absolute jol!  I loved every minute of it, and should have carried on doing it (diving, that is)… but that’s a story for another day.

While we were there, a fishing boat came in the one day with a marlin on the back (just after we’d come in from a dive).  I remember how outraged we all were about it.  It was such a beautiful, huge fish, and it was heartbreaking to see it on the boat.  Absolutely heartbreaking.   It was also particularly heart-wrenching because we’d just come from our dive and were in absolute awe with what we’d seen.

So yes, I do understand where she’s coming from.  But, I’m still going to eat fish ;)

Have had a hectic few days

August 8, 2008 filed under friends, Uncategorized | Comments Closed

Man, it’s been hectic!  And we’ve had problems with internet at home, so I haven’t been able to update my blogs (oh, and not to forget the Blogspot problems – so I’m definitely moving self-hosted now – well, when I get back home)

I’m sitting at the beach, listening to the waves ;)   More on that later!

On Wednesday night, I met a few friends for dinner.  Sarah is in town (or was) from Uganda, so we just had to have a girls night out.  What a stunning time we had!  Good food, good wine, good friends…it can’t get any better.

Party conversations

April 14, 2008 filed under Uncategorized | Comments Closed

partygoers
I had such a lovely time at Laura’s 30th on Saturday night, and I haven’t had a chance before now to jot it down.  I left Lance at home with the kids, and went jol’ing with my friends, it was soooo nice!

We all met on the internet on a moms forum.  Now normally, when the bunch of us go out, it’s with kids and during the day.  And when we meet up at night, it’s normally just the “girls” at bookclub or a ladies night out on the town.  This time it was different, half the ladies brought their partners/husbands… but shame, they were a bit outnumbered and the conversations continued as if they weren’t around :) .  If fact, they got ganged up against in some scenarios.

Hee hee!  I’m probably going to get a bit of flack for this from some of the partygoers, but here are some of the topics that were discussed…  just for fun… because I really enjoyed them.

Husbands that don’t make sure their wive’s cars are roadworthy… well.. kindof… we were ganging up against the one husband because he was moaning that his wife’s car’s clutch was about to give in. I mean really… surely he should take more notice. LOL! ;)
The smell that eminates from cooking chicken’s feet… a township delicacy.
Who is emigrating and how far they are and where they are going… the standard conversation at every party at the moment.

And once the wine started flowing it just deteriorated… basically a continuation from some bookclub conversations…

How often you should have sex a week
Sending your partner s&x SMSes once a day makes difference
…The new vibrator on the market that you can hook up to an iPod! (Thought Veronica would enjoy that one ;) )
…Whether 10 minutes is enough time for a quickie
…Blowj%bs in under 10 minutes and whether you do them or not

LOL, it was a fun night :) You should have seen some of the partners faces, some were very keen on bookclub after that :)
