When I think of all the children that live like this, my eyes just well up with tears.

SheBee wrote the most powerful post that I’ve read in a long time.  You just have to read it…

It reminded me of the stories that Kevin Lowe told us at the company offsite last year.  I did write about it at the time, about the 8 year old prostitutes that are paid R20 by the truck drivers that pick them on the highways for blowjobs etc.  He specifically worked in the squatter camps and low-cost housing communities that are next to the N1 highway going South from Jo’burg.

And you know, since then, every time we travel to Parys to visit my MIL, I try and see if I can see the kids he was talking about.  I have yet to spot them, but I’m sure they’re there.  I’m sure I just don’t know where to look.  In fact, the communities are now building MASSIVE brick walls along the highway, and I’m sure that part of the reason for the walls is to keep the kids in the area and stop them from walking on the highways.

The sad fact though, is that the families don’t have any other income, just as SheBee mentions in her post.  That money is all they get to live on.

Kevin explained last year how difficult it is for them to get the childcare grants in those communities.  And that’s one of the main areas that he assists them with.  The problem is that most of them were never registered at birth, so they don’t have birth certificates or ID’s.  Therefore they can’t get a grant.

And to get your birth registered is virtually impossible!!  Especially if your parents have died, which is the case with most of these kids!  So it’s a vicious circle actually.  I’ll post tomorrow about the problems Beauty is having with Home Affairs trying to get an ID for her sister.

I feel so frustrated at the situation, and so desperately sorry for the kids.  And reading SheBee’s post makes me just want to hug and kiss and cuddle my kids.
