We have had the most awesome day.

Friends. Amazing weather. Picnic under indigenous trees. Fishing for the first time. Ribs on a braai. Too much good food. Champagne. Monkeys in the trees.

We had a picnic with friends to celebrate Madelein’s birthday at the Brookwood Trout Farm in the Cradle of Humankind. It felt like we were miles from Johannesburg, yet it was so close!

What a gorgeous place! It has 5 dams stocked with fish. 3 of the dams were only for adults to use… which the kids were a little upset about, but really they didn’t need to fish there.

You pay an entrance to get into the place for the day, and after being there, and seeing the amazing facilities, you can see why. It’s so beautiful. Even though the car park was pretty full, it didn’t feel crowded, and there was plenty of space.

We sat under a huge stinkwood tree close to the river. There was plenty of shade, which was really welcome in today’s scorching weather. The kids had a ball. They ran and explored and climbed trees and generally had fun being kids.

Then after the long long lunch, we rented fishing rods and some bait for them to try their hand at fishing. They didn’t mind at all that they didn’t catch anything. I was relieved, because I really didn’t feel like paying for trout! LOL!

At the end of the day, the kids have not stopped talking about their fishy adventures, and now there are plans afoot to go fishing again.

It’s not your average Jozi day out, and it’s well worth the short drive.
