The Spookfontein winery is 10km outside Hermanus in the Hemel en Aarde Valley. What an absolutely gorgeous setting! The restaurant Ell, on the wine farm, is quite high up on the slopes of the mountain and has the most amazing views over the valley from the huge glass windows that surround it.

We met my aunt and uncle for lunch at the restaurant. My aunt had booked lunch there after it had been recommended to her, and OMW what a fantastic choice!

Ell is an “ethical eatery” and they only cook food that has been ethically sourced. In fact, the fish on the menu that day was trout from a farm close by,from dams fed by mountain streams.  This is from their site:

All produce & ingredients are of the finest quality & sourced locally from ethical suppliers, with sustainable & organic farming practices as a guideline.

First we had to sample the wines from Spookfontein… they produce organic single vineyard wines. We decided that our favourite was the Phantom 2008, so we bought a bottle to have with our lunch.

The food was amazing. The kids had pizzas, which is what they specialise in, and I had a lamb burger. They don’t have fizzy colddrinks on the menu, so the kids had the homemade iced tea and fresh orange juice, and all had seconds, so that was a hit too!

But serious… how’s this view?!

Such an amazing place!
